What is Bank Week? That sounds boring. Perhaps it sounds this way, but there are all sorts of different career paths at the big banks! It seems like most people only talk about Investment Banking. The sessions this week are designed to help you learn about those options. The target audience is clueless students, so you don’t need to know anything. If you are even slightly curious you should attend to learn
I’m only a sophomore. Shouldn’t I wait until next year to worry about junior year internships? Unfortunately, the firms do their engagement events for sophomores now. Some will even be interviewing as early as March for junior-year internships in summer of 2023. Fall may be too late.
I haven’t even taken a finance course yet. Why would I go? That is why we are holding this event. These sessions are being hosted to teach you what these internships/careers entail. It is for people who need more information. Tuesday through Thursday are geared solely at educating students. You do not need to know anything, just go to any or all of the sessions to learn.
What do I say or ask? I don't want to look stupid. All questions will be asked anonymously via a live poll, so the employers won't even know who is asking the questions. Events from Monday to Thursday are NOT networking sessions. These are strictly to help you better understand the different areas of banks and what the different functions entail.
I already know all about these career fields. If that is truly the case, just skip the info sessions and just go to the networking event on Friday.
What's with the color-coding on the schedule? We broke up sessions into three categories. Green events are introductory, educational panels with basic information; you don't need to know anything about the topic to attend. Yellow events give a deeper dive; many are focused on building skills (such as interviewing) or networking. Purple events are introductory with a special focus on diverse candidates, including women and students of color.
Do I need to attend them all? No, just go to whatever sessions are covering the fields you want to learn about.
What if I am not in CSOM? That does not matter! In fact, many of these firms are seeking students from all schools and majors.
What happens at the Friday Networking event? This looks more like a career fair, the employers will be at separate tables and you will be able to walk around and meet them. Also, Friday morning from 9:30-11:00 AM is a diversity networking session for underrepresented students (including women). Each of the banks will be available at that time to talk about the different diversity programs they have available.
How do I know if I am included in the “diversity” category for Friday’s networking session? The banks are making an effort to hire people who have been traditionally underrepresented in the finance industry. You can find a list of programs here. Many are geared towards women, students of color, students with disabilities, first-generation college students, and LGBTQ students.
Should I dress up? Business casual is recommended for Friday's event. For all other sessions, come as you are!
What if I don't have business attire? Visit the Career Closet! The Boston College Career Closet is open to all Boston College students. Any items taken from the closet are free of charge and yours to keep. No returns are necessary. You may take and keep up to three items in an academic year. Visit this website to learn more.
How can I get help with the technical interviews? Train the Street are intensive 4-hour workshops that provide technical interview prep for financial fields. These will be held on Friday, February 10 (Valuation) and Saturday, February 11 (Financial Modeling). These normally cost hundreds of dollars, but BC has paid so you can get it for free. Virtual and open to all. Get more information here.
I got an interview after Bank Week! Where can I go to do my video call? Request a room in the Career Center. Make sure to book early, as spaces fill quickly.
