Fitness Breaks

Here are some ideas to do some exercise and have a break from the computer or from sitting down. Although separated into Year groups, some activities appear in all year levels as they can be adapted or extended by setting different challenges using time, space or equipment. Feel free to choose from the activities in another year level if your child shows interest in these.

Play a board game- these are great for learning about taking turns, patience, following directions and strategic and logical thinking

Hot Potato

Simply get a soft ball or a rolled up sock and toss it to a child. Tell them toss it to someone else as quickly as possible. Everyone repeats this. When does this game end? Who knows? Just get rid of it!

Variations – Play short segments of music while they toss the “potato”, stop the music, and the last one to touch it after the music stops is out. The last child in wins

Follow the Leader

No real trick here – just follow where the leader goes! Under a table? Over a tree stump?

Variations – This physical activity can easily go along with Simon Says, and instead of the kids just following, they also have to do exactly what the leader does. Jumping jacks, dancing, headstands, whatever!

Scavenger hunt

Create a scavenger hunt for your students to do around their neighbourhood or in their home. Depending on the level of your students, modify what you have them look for and what they are to do with the items they find in their scavenger hunt. Have students create a scavenger hunt for themselves or for a family member or friend.

Examples:

Find five things that are red (indoors/outdoors)

Find two things that are square (indoors/outdoors)

Find something that is heavier than a tennis ball (indoors/outdoors)

Find 10 birds (outdoors)

Find a building with more than 20 windows (outdoors)

Dance

Tell your students to turn on the radio, play their favorite song online, or listen to music on their personal device.

Obstacle course

Use objects around your house to set up an obstacle course. Video tape yourself going through your obstacle course using different loco-motor skills and different levels. Ask your students to create their own obstacle course and come up with creative ways to go through it. Have them show their obstacle course to someone else so both of them can go through it. You could show your students the same obstacle course and come up with different ways to go through it. Challenge your students to come up with various ways to complete the obstacle course.

Animal Races

Some races the kids need to hop like a frog. Or run on all fours like a dog. Or maybe crawl on the ground like a lizard! Make it more fun with costumes! Which animal is fastest?

Bowling

Get some items that you can stand up like empty water bottles or plastic cups, grab a big enough ball, and start rolling to knock over the “pins”

Variations – Make a target on the ground using masking tape. With each section worth different amounts of points, the children can roll the ball trying to stop it within the different target areas, competing for points

Target Practise

Place targets on the fence or the window using paper and blue tack. Use nerf guns or water guns to shoot and score points.

Indoor Basketball

Make “snowballs” out of some pairs of socks, then get a laundry basket (or something smaller to increase the physical challenges). Have the students take turns trying to make a basket, and have them try some longer shots worth more points! A student wins when they get a certain amount of points.

Variations – Each student tosses the basketball, and if they make a basket they take one step back. Repeat. Whoever steps the farthest back without missing wins.
