Social Studies: Families Now and Long Ago, Near and Far
The first-grade year builds on the concepts developed in kindergarten by focusing on the individual as a member of a family. Students begin to understand how families lived long ago and how they live in other cultures. They develop concepts about how the world is organized spatially through beginning map skills. They build the foundation for understanding principles of government and their roles as citizens.

Homework
Homework is not assigned in 1st grade. The first grade teachers want the children to be creative, active and enjoy play time. It is our hope the children will also enjoy daily reading activities.
Snack and Water Bottle
Please send in a spill-proof water bottle labeled with your first grader’s name. Students are encouraged to drink water during the day and will have the opportunity to eat a small snack each afternoon. Healthy snacks that have minimal cleanup are best! Acceptable snacks include: crackers, pretzels, cereal, string cheese, raisins, fruit or veggies, etc... Please note that peanut butter, nuts, candy, cakes, and greasy, or finger-coloring chips are not permitted. Snacks should not require any sort of utensil (spoon, fork) and need to be eaten within a few minutes.
Birthdays
We love to celebrate birthdays in first grade! We’ll be sure to sing happy birthday and give our birthday friends time to shine during morning meeting. Due to food allergies and a number of other reasons, birthday celebrations are food-free at BBHES. In the past, families have improvised by passing out non-edible treats such as pencils, erasers or stickers. We ask that you not send party invitations through the classroom unless you are inviting the entire class OR all of the boys OR all of the girls in the class.
