Reader's Workshop and Writers Workshop uses a workshop model. There are several consistent components but there is much variation on how it is implemented in different classrooms. There are 5-6 different units that we will use throughout the year.

Characteristics
- Mini-lessons on some aspect of literature or a reading strategy.
- Independent Reading Time or Writing Time, where students keep a journal and respond to the literature in terms of what they think or how they feel about what they are reading.
- Sharing Time where students share with another person their journal entries and the other person gives feedback.
- During Independent Reading Time and Writing Time, the teacher engages in student conferences on an individual or group basis. Teachers can also engage in guided reading with groups of students who need additional support

We use a Diagnostic Reading Assessment throughout the year to identify reading level/comprehension and fluency. Small group instruction and reading groups are assessed through anecdotal records.
We use a Diagnostic Reading Assessment throughout the year to identify reading level/comprehension and fluency. Small group instruction and reading groups are assessed through anecdotal records.
Homework is not graded, but used to drive instruction and create small groups. Participation is graded and noted in report card. Effort is also graded and noted in report card. Participation and effort are informally observed.

Our grading policy does not include dropping or curving grades. Students will rarely, if at all, earn a grade of a zero. We provide additional time, support, resources, and instruction to avoid a grade of a 0. We offer make-up work and opportunities to retake tests if requested or necessary. We do not offer extra credit. We do accept late work, with a deduction in points given. Neatness is not graded on assessments, but taken into account when it becomes challenging in deciphering the answer. A rubric that includes neatness will be used for special projects during the year.
