Welcome to the home of the Breakers! Here, current Bay students and their families can find the information they need regarding participation in team sports and activity classes throughout the school year.
If you have any questions, please visit our FAQ page, or don't hesitate to reach out to the athletics office at athletics@bayschoolsf.org.
Through the daily challenges of practices and competitions, our student athletes gain knowledge of and skill in their sport while also cultivating leadership, teamwork, and life skills. Our athletic administration and coaches provide the support and mentorship needed for our student-athletes to achieve academic, athletic and personal growth.
“We built an athletic program that is characterized by a competitive integrity. We want to win...but we don’t lose sight that there are fundamental values that transcend the importance of winning and losing records; perseverance, self-discipline, a deep and abiding commitment to your teammates to your coaches, inform every athletes experience at The Bay School.”
Dennis Hartzell - Founding Bay School basketball coach and former Assistant Head of School
MISSION STATEMENT
We value athletic participation as a means for personal growth and self-discovery. The Bay School commitment to athletics is based upon our mission to educate the whole person and on our belief that physical exercise and athletic participation have important lifelong benefits. In Bay athletics, like Bay academics, we emphasize effort, positivity, perseverance, collaboration, and commitment.
By modeling these values, and guided by the school’s precepts, we promote a safe, kind, and respectful athletic culture, an environment where we can individually and collectively make mistakes, learn from them, and grow. Through the daily challenges of practices and competitions, our student athletes gain knowledge of and skill in their sport while also cultivating leadership, teamwork and life skills. Our athletic administration and coaches will provide the support and mentorship needed for our student athletes to achieve both academic and athletic growth.
PHILOSOPHY
It is our goal to yield competitive teams across the entire athletic program because we believe that the growth, learning, connection, and fun comes from putting forth full effort at every practice and competition in pursuit of success. Consistent with the school’s approach to academics, we focus on the process, knowing that the results will take care of themselves. We provide various levels of participation for team sports, including varsity, junior varsity and intramural options where applicable, allowing students the ability to compete at a high level while also promoting participation and skill development.
INCLUSIVITY
Participation in interscholastic athletics is one of the many ways that students can build community at Bay. While we aspire to accommodate as many students as possible in their desired sport, there are roster limits that may result in a student not being offered a spot on the team. For students that do not make a team in their desired sport, we will work with that student to try and find other opportunities in the athletic/activity program to help build community at Bay.
As affirmed in our precepts, The Bay School values the richness of difference and diversity. With regard to gender, we recognize that there is a broad range of gender experience and expression and seek to be gender-inclusive in our school athletic program. Bay is a proud member of the California Interscholastic Federation and abides by the rules governing participation in interscholastic sports in California. Below is the language regarding athletic participation adopted in the CIF bylaws, section 300, provision D:
Gender Identity Participation in interscholastic athletics is a valuable part of the educational experience for all students. All students should have the opportunity to participate in CIF activities in a manner that is consistent with their gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on a student’s records. (Approved February 2013 Federated Council/Editorial May 2022).
