Types of Financial Aid
Grants
Money from the federal or state government, college/university or private companies or organization. Most grants are need based and do not need to be repaid.
The Federal Pell Grant is a need based grant based on the FAFSA and may be up to $6,095.
FAFSA completion required for all grants.
Scholarships
Money that is won or given for a variety of reasons such as academic, athletic or personal attributes or affiliations.
Some scholarships are need based, some are not. FAFSA MAY be required.
They do not need to be repaid, but may require a student to re-apply each year or meet certain requirements to continue with award.
Work-Study
Money that is earned from work typically on-campus while in college.
Work study money comes from the federal and state governments or from the college and does not need to be repaid.
Awarded to need based AND non-need students.
Students are paid as they work their hours and is often available in time for living expenses throughout the term.
Federal and Private Bank Loans
Money that is borrowed from the federal or state government, a lender or other private source
Must be repaid once the student graduates or drops below half-time registration status; typically with interest
Both students and parents can borrow money from the federal government

Types of Loans
- Direct Subsidized Loans: No interest while enrolled at least half-time
- Direct Unsubsidized Loans: With interest while enrolled at least half-time
- Direct PLUS Loans: With interest while enrolled at least half-time
