One way BAR-N can support local ranchers is by providing them a market for their sustainable and regenerative surplus or culled animals and processing them into high-quality meat and poultry. BAR-N can also help promote these products to local consumers and educate them about the benefits of eating sustainably and regeneratively raised meat.
BAR-N will process culled cows from BAR-C members for the food insecure by coordinating with BAR-C to harvest and process the cows at no cost to the rancher. This would allow BAR-N to sell or provide the beef at a reduced or zero price to charitable organizations who could then distribute it to those in need.
This same concept could be applied to other culled animals, such as pigs, chickens, sheep, and goats. By working with BAR-C and its members, BAR-N can provide a much-needed service to ranchers and the food insecure while promoting climate smart agriculture practices.
BAR-N will support emergency relief for BAR-C Ranchers. This will include but not be limited to purchasing livestock and harvesting it at BAR-C to then provide much-needed food during our communities’ times of need.
BAR-N can also provide support to ranchers when they need sales outlets. During Covid, many wholesale customers stopped purchasing from the small and medium-sized farms resulting in a surplus of products not being moved. BAR-N can help move these products where the community most needs them.
This program will help ranchers during times of drought, wildfire, and other natural disasters. It will allow them to keep their businesses open and improve their chances of bouncing back after the disaster.
With the support of BAR-N, BAR-C can help support other local food sheds by providing business guidance to build more successful small animal harvesting facilities.
The mobile unit steering committee (MUSC) wrote a business plan for BAR-C, which can be used as a model for other regions. BAR-N will support other start-ups, by providing business consulting to help them be more successful when starting up their small processing facilities.
The success of BAR-C can be used as a model for other regions looking to build a more sustainable system. BAR-N can use the experience of BAR-C to help other regions identify and assess the feasibility of cooperative models, develop business plans, and provide training and support for ranchers in these regions.
This will help improve access to more regenerative and sustainable ranches and farms throughout the United States, which will have a positive impact on the environment. It will also create new jobs and support local economies.
BAR-N will help support the next generations of farmers and ranchers.
The local FFA and 4H groups raise livestock annually. BAR-N can provide local support to provide processing services for livestock raised by our future farmers and ranchers. This will provide an opportunity to teach the next generation about regenerative agriculture and the lost art of butchery, which is a key part of our mission.
In addition, BAR-N could provide support for these organizations to use the BAR-C facility to host processing days for the local 4H group Turkey program.
