Where We Started- Foundation of Energy in Alberta

Much of the energy used in the past century has come through non-renewable fossil fuel sources like oil, coal and gas. The Battle River region is no exception, as coal mines like the one south of Forestburg and the oil and gas terminal at Hardisty have been operating since the 1950s. From the ATCO Power coal-fired generating station to new biofuel alternatives, energy producers continue to seek out ways of creating energy more efficiently and with a smaller footprint. They all recognize the value of investing in new technologies and renewable alternatives.

It is important to understand that a transition to a more sustainable future will not happen overnight. Additionally, it cannot be understated how important the economic prosperity brought by natural resource development in the region has been for local communities.
