Starting in the 2017/2018 school year, my teaching partner and I shifted our practice in MS/HS ELA courses from a teacher- and content-driven system of delivery to a student- and standards-driven system of personalized learning and student agency using an ELA standards-aligned reflective portfolio management system via Google Apps For Education sites, etc.
We changed class time to be a more student-driven, feedback-focused, guide-on-the-ride experience intended to support student independence, engagement, enthusiasm, and self-directed learning, by integrating elements of the distinguished category of Danielson’s Framework, the Teacher’s Going Gradeless mindset, Project Based Learning, Free Voluntary Reading, blended learning, unschooling, WA State Alternative Ed law, evaluating home school coursework for high school credit, and student agency ideas inspired by books like Empower by John Spencer and A. J. Juliani.
