Focus for November:

Native Americans of Washington State

Completed in class

  • Week of Nov 10-14:  This week we discussed the resources that are found within our state and how those resources supported the first people in our area.  We talked about how these resources have changed and what we currently depend on in our daily lives.  We also learned that Washington has a state soil called Tokul!

  • Week of Nov 3-7:  This week we continued learning about the Native Americans in our state.  We discussed the difference between the coastal and plateau tribes.  We also learned about the "Kennewick Man" and what we have learned about the first people in our state from his remains.

  • Week of Oct 27-31:  This week we had a great time starting our salt dough maps of the state of Washington.  We will be continuing to paint these maps next week.  We also have been learning about the first people who lived in the area of Washington.

  • Week of Oct 20-24:  This week we had our final practice and test for the state of Washington map.  Everyone has done a great job learning more about our state map over the last 2 months of school.  We will finish up our learning about the geography of Washington next week with our salt dough maps!

  • Week of Oct. 13-17: This week we finished practicing identifying the locations of various cities in Washington State.  We are now preparing for our full map that has cities, lakes, landforms, and rivers!  Practice the Kahoots posted on Google Classroom to help you memorize these locations!

  • Week of Oct. 6-9:  This week we continued learning about cities in our state by doing a small research project about the cities on our map.  We learned how different cities got their names and some cool facts about each city.

  • Week of Sept 29-Oct 3:  This week we learned key cities in our state.  We added them to our map of Washington and will keep practicing labeling everything correctly.  Copies of a blank cities map and a labeled map can be found on the Classlink Google classroom for practicing at home.

  • Week of Sept 22-26: This week we continued to practice the landforms in our state.  On Google Classroom, there is a practice map and a labeled map so that our class can continue practicing at home.  our goal is to be able to successfully identify these key features of our State by the end of this unit.

  • Week of Sept 15-19:  This week we focused on landforms within our state.  We talked about topographic maps and the information that they provide.  The class is excited to make their own topographic maps of Washington state in October.  If your student would like more information about the topics we are discussing, I have posted on Google Classroom copies of a weekly Washington Studies for Kids newspaper that is very informative and fun to read.

  • Week of Sept 8-12:  This week we learned the 5 main regions in Washington.  We worked to identify them on maps.  We also worked on identifying the major mountain ranges and volcanic peaks in our state.  Next week, we will work on identifying major bodies of water within our state.

  • Week of Sept 2-5: This week we started off the year by filling in a map of Washington with all of the things that we already know.  We reviewed the compass directions and identified our state's neighbors to the North, South, East, and West.  Next week, we will start learning about the geographic regions in our state, the climate in the different regions, and some of the major landforms in the different regions.
