Kinder Language Arts & Writing

By the end of kindergarten, students will be able to recognize their first and last name, and write all 26 letters of the alphabet, both uppercase and lowercase, as well as the double sounds of letters like "c" and "g". They will know the correct sound or sounds that each letter makes and they will be able to read about 60 of the BGSD required high-frequency words -- also called "sight words" -- such as and, the, and in. Students will also become familiar with blends, digraphs, word families, rhyme, segmenting, and the short and long vowel sounds found in CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) and CVVC, and CVCV combination or words, and write simple CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words, such as hat, red, and dog. They will also write short, simple sentences such as "The cat ran home."
