MS US History
Mrs. Donahue
First-I LOVE our country’s story and I love talking about it, learning about it and sharing experiences!
All state requirements will be met in this class. We will be using the district textbook “The American Journey” as our base. For MS history, we cover the American Revolution to Reconstruction. Most of the information will be via slideshows I have created, discussion, timeline creation, and hands on learning activities/projects. We will use articles and the textbook at times to build social studies skills and help students to be prepared for high school.
Work coming home will mainly be literature. We will be reading the following books, in this order (I have purchased the books:
Woods Runner by Gary Paulsen (American Revolution)
Rifles for Watie by Harold Keith (Civil War)
Forty Acres and Maybe a Mule by Harriette Gillem Robinet (Reconstruction)
Extra Credit: The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane ( I think this book is so important and I love it, but it is not easy to get through) (Civil War)
I love these books and feel they contribute the human element to history that adds value to our story. All books are in my classroom for preview if you are interested.
Students will be expected to:
Read the assigned text and fill out a very simple reading log.
Attend class, they will receive a 0 if they miss a class. They can make it up by viewing the slideshow for that day (posted in Google Classroom) and providing a summary. History is sequential, you can’t just skip portions.
