English Language Arts: reading, writing, language, speaking and listening
Washington Common Core State Standards will guide teaching and student learning throughout the academic year. Below you will find links to English language arts areas of focus and teaching for sixth-grade students.
We will be using Common Lit for our English Language Arts Curriculum this year. If you would like to know more about the curriculum you can check out the About page HERE.
Unit 3 of our curriculum includes a novel study of The Giver. We will be reading this novel collectively as a class. You can review The Giver HERE.
We will focus on all genres of writing starting with some review of constructing a well-written paragraph and moving through narrative, argumentative/opinion, and informational writing.
In addition to the Common Lit Curriculum, we will work our way through Wordly Wise Book 6. Common Lit does touch on vocabulary, but we also add Wordly Wise to get that deeper knowledge. At CAM Academy students use Wordly Wise starting in fifth grade and finish the curriculum in eighth grade. You can check out Wordly Wise Curriculum HERE.
Finally, grammar will be practiced throughout writing, and reading lessons with targeted practice using daily Five-A-Day worksheets. You can find the topics we will cover this year HERE.
