1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module gives you an opportunity for independent learning with an applied focus and a more innovative form. It concentrates on skills development, both subject-specific and more general. Examples of skills emphasised in philosophy are ‘precision of thought and expression’, ‘clarity and rigour in the critical assessment of arguments’, and ‘the ability to construct rationally persuasive arguments’. Examples of skills emphasised in study of religions are ‘the ability to understand how people … think and act … in contexts other than the student’s own’, ‘sensitivity … to the issues of multiple and conflicting interpretations of language and symbols, texts and traditions’, and ‘the ability to employ a variety of methods of study in analysing material’. More generally, Bath Spa University has identified graduate attributes that should inform the choice of project activities and outputs, featuring employability, creativity, digital literacy, international networked, critical and ethically aware. The project itself could involve a variety of activities, such as a placement in an organisation, participation in a summer school (or other relevant international experience) or convening a special event, and lead to a variety of outputs such as a portfolio of materials, a short documentary film or a digital media presentation.
It aims to:
Enable you to produce a sustained piece of independent applied work to professional standards and thus enhance skills necessary to graduate employment;
Support you to conduct a project (agreed with the module co-ordinator) within the study of religions, philosophy and ethics;
Assist you to identify and exploit opportunities for projects;
Equip you to communicate project outcomes in appropriate styles and fora; and
Prepare you to apply and enhance your subject-specific and other skills and attributes with a view to future career prospects.
