1. Brief description and aims of module:
In the last thirty years sexual health has become one of the most important areas of public health. Understanding the psychology of sexual health is central to interventions for the protection and improvement of sexual health at individual, community and global levels. This module aims to provide you with a better understanding of the psychology of sexual health.
For the coursework in this module you will need to write an academic rationale for a research project that investigates some aspect of the psychology of sexual health (please note: you are not required to produce a complete research proposal or to undertake the research project!) A sound and persuasive academic rationale in an important component in any research proposal as it indicates why the proposed research has scientific value (that is what it is likely to add to our knowledge and understanding of the research topic). A strong academic rationale is especially important in research that investigates sexual behaviour and sexual health, as these are considered ‘potentially sensitive topics’, which involve ‘more than minimal risk’ (BPS, 2014, p. 13). Those of you who have undertaken research methods modules will already be used to writing academic rationales in your research reports and ethics forms. Additional guidance and support will however be provided in seminars to help you develop this key academic skill.
