1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module provides the foundation for MUS6011-20 Independent Study 2 in semester 2. It enables you to work on either a written or practice-led research project across two semesters. In Independent Study 1 you will undertake preparatory research to support your final submission, presenting this in an appropriate format for your project.
2. Outline syllabus
In Independent Study 1 you develop either a written or practice-led research project, working with a project supervisor.
Initially you will work with your supervisor to develop a project proposal and summarise this in a research plan. This working document will formalise the aims, research questions, methods, structure and ethical implications of your research.
On completion of the plan, you will work with your assigned project supervisor in tutorials and through independent study to develop the research over the semester, presenting this in an appropriate format. Initial seminars will consider good practice in project planning, management and presentation.
The final submission will be a 5000-word written document that outlines the foundation for the research to be undertaken in Semester 2. Typically this might be an introduction, literature survey and bibliography for a written project, or a research commentary for a practice-led project. In Independent Study 2 you will complete the project, typically by submitting the full thesis including the main chapters and conclusion for a written project, or through presenting and documenting the practice for a practice-led project.
3. Teaching and learning activities
Following initial seminars which consider good practice in project planning, management and presentation, you will work with your project supervisor to realise your project through regular tutorials.
