1. Brief description and aims of module:
Composition 6 (Event) develops your skills through making work to be presented in a specified public event. You will make work which is suitable for realisation within the constraints of the event, working with other composers, musicians, and producers as appropriate. The project aims to further develop your skills as a composer at an advanced level and help you realise your work within the context of current compositional thought and cultural practice.
2. Outline syllabus:
You will undertake a single composition project that will be realised in a public event. The project will respond to constraints presented by the space, resources, collaborators, and the practicality of the event. You will continue to explore compositional aesthetics and techniques when working within a specified context or set of constraints in order to produce a final piece of work for your degree. Through this work you will continue to develop the scope of your compositional practice and further consolidate your personal voice as a composer. You will refine your notation and production skills and develop your understanding of compositional techniques through the study of contemporary repertoire and the practical application of these skills.
3. Teaching and learning activities:
You will work independently, supported by your tutor, and in collaboration with other members of the creative and production team. The project will be delivered through seminars and tutorials, as well as production meetings and rehearsals leading to the final performance. You will make your own work, and assist in the documentation of the event with the whole team.
In addition, regular symposia will bring all composition students together to provide a wider context for current compositional practice.
