1. Brief description and aims of module:
The aim of this module is to consider important issues in jazz and jazz performance. We will study of some of the key jazz texts and the performative implications of those writer’s/composer’s/artist’s works. You will continue to build on the core jazz studies modules at level 5 by further developing your improvisational skills within a wider understanding of contemporary jazz performance practice.
2. Outline syllabus:
Through weekly workshops you will develop critical awareness of the key texts in jazz literature and recordings, with a particular focus on modern jazz idioms. Particular focus will be given to the development of melodic, rhythmic, and improvisatory elements over the past 40 years. These elements will be explored in theoretical and practical ways (F.1) building on the skills you have developed in Jazz studies 1 and 2. You will prepare a detailed reflective summary of the texts (S.1) and prepare an ensemble performance of a contemporary jazz composition (S.2)

Weekly lecture/workshops plus additional visiting performer workshop/masterclasses.
