1. Brief description and aims of module:
In this module you will produce an online portfolio consisting of professional-standard self-initiated journalistic writing tailored to your field of interest and career goals.
You will write a series of articles that demonstrate the depth of your knowledge in your chosen field of interest and a clear understanding of the publication context. You will research, write and edit articles which target particular audiences and demonstrate an understanding of global context, editorial judgement, regulatory, ethical and legal issues which could affect your work.
You will work largely independently, with tutor and peer guidance, and develop your individual approach and working practice as a journalist. This module will consolidate your abilities to plan and manage journalistic projects, meet deadlines with both speed and accuracy, edit your own work thoroughly and present engaging images, headlines and captions.
You will refine the creative identity of your writing and your particular approach to the chosen field of interest. Your work will demonstrate an understanding of the importance of relevance - responding to and engaging with current trends, concerns, events, issues, and debates - in gaining an audience for your work and ultimately, journalism commissions.
