1. Brief description and aims of module:

This module offers you an opportunity to be involved in an international field investigation of contemporary issues in human, physical and development geography. In order to effectively and sustainably manage these complex & multi-disciplinary issues, it is important to establish an understanding of the interconnected nature of landscape, place and people across both time and space. The module is centred on a residential fieldtrip with in-situ project investigation and is supported by preparatory seminars and post-trip project workshops, as appropriate. It aims to:

• Permit detailed field-based investigation of course themes in chosen locations, in collaboration with local communities and International HEIs to experience cross-cultural working (where permissible);

• Extend theoretical and practical knowledge through international fieldwork in dynamic environments and developing societies;

• Provide experience of designing, leading, conducting and reporting on small-scale field research investigations using quantitative and qualitative techniques; develop higher level field skills in: team leadership, observation, survey/ participatory approaches, data analysis, and critical reflection.

2. Outline syllabus:

The module provides a fieldwork experience equivalent to at least 5 full days of field-based investigation. During the module you will develop knowledge of multi-disciplinary research approaches, drawing upon the breadth of the geography discipline. You will acquire a good understanding of the complex issues within the study region and the management of field investigations.

3. Teaching and learning activities:

Structured preparation and follow-up sessions in the form of seminars, and workshops are added to time spent in the field, and will further develop your understanding of a number of current issues. In the field, you will undertake a mixture of staff-led orientation and introductory field lectures as a lead into to student project work. As a Level 6 student you will undertake a greater leadership role in student-led project data collection.
