1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module aims to extend the critical awareness and knowledge of the importance of music for screen. The main emphasis area of the module is aimed at music and how it has evolved to become a vital aspect of TV, Film and Digital Media. Through analysis, discussions and research, students will gain valuable knowledge of music for screen.
The module will also give you directorial knowledge and enable you to dissect and analyse media to form their own ideas for how music could be integrated into a production. The module will also take this integration further and will teach students the technical knowledge needed to fully implement music into a production using the relevant software. This will enable you to gain valuable, industry-relevant experience and will aid future productions.
2.Outline syllabus:
The workshops and seminars will cover:
Music in Cinema, Film and Digital Media: Historical approaches
Analysis of music in Digital Media
The importance of finding the ‘right’ composer
Music editing techniques
STEM integration
Directorial viewpoints and music analysis
Audio file types
Music in stereo
Music for surround sound
Analog recordings and the rise of digital recording techniques
3.Teaching and learning activities:
The module will consist of a mixture of lectures and production workshops.
Through this module, you will be introduced to music in the context of media and its importance in storytelling. The lectures will cover the history of music in the media and will also serve to analyse and discuss compositional works and devices to gain an understanding of how music can be used to drastically enhance any production.
The workshops will focus more on the technical aspects of music for screen and will give you the opportunity to work on integrating music into existing productions and also to experience different music delivery formats and mixing techniques.
The combination of taught lectures and practical workshops will give students the required knowledge and understanding to be able to work with composers to enhance their productions through the medium of music.
