1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module examines the role of gender and its relationship to the creation and reception of theatre and performance. Through study of dramatic texts ranging from Ancient Greece to the present day, issues such as representations of gender, the construction of identity, the history of sexuality, and feminist theory, will be considered in both a historical and contemporary context.
Aims
To develop your critical appreciation of gender representations in theatre and to introduce you to key issues of gender theory in relation to theatre and performance.
To examines theatrical representations of gender in a selection of dramatic and performance texts from Ancient Greece to 21st Century
2. Outline syllabus:
This module explores how theatre and performance have reflected and been shaped by gender and identity through the ages. Through critical examination of a selection of dramatic and performance texts, as well as key issues of gender theory, you will learn how to “read against the text” to explore how theatre has acted as a forum for reflecting, endorsing and challenging contemporary gender politics.
