Explore the socio-cultural debates around musicals
Examine a broad range of musicals and musical numbers from different cultural perspectives
2. Outline syllabus:
In this module we will probe the intersection of musicals and the wider culture, drawing on examples from stage, film and TV to examine how musicals have used their unique combination of music, drama and dance to engage with social issues from the mid-1900s to the present through exploration of topics such as race and the musical; subversion of gender roles in the musical; musicals and gay culture; and Disney and the musical.
3. Teaching and Learning:
This module will be taught through interactive lecture-seminars. You will be expected to complete reading /viewing / listening assignments, contribute to class discussions, and will undertake research and critical analysis assignments into aspects of the module that particularly interest you.
PRACTICAL NOTE: To avoid any confusion, please note that this is a seminar class and does not involve practical work (no singing and dancing required, just appreciation and analysis of other people doing so!). Equally, while prior experience of Musical Theatre will be a useful reference point, it is not a requirement.
