1.Brief description of module
This module explores animation in the context of a rapidly developing field, virtual and augmented reality. This areas of technology presents both the games and film industry with many new issues to deal with. As animators, we are required to develop new ways of thinking about viewing and consuming information and entertainment in 360 degrees.
During the module you will learn how to develop animation for augmented reality (AR) headsets to consider the possibilities for mixed reality (MR) games and experiences. You will use virtual reality (VR) headsets and consider the possibilities for narrative and animation/film-making in 360x360 degrees. You will consider the current limitations of this technology as well as the potential for future developments.
This module will involve some teamwork as you consider the implications of VR/AR/MR, whether through the creation of social media experiences, stories, interactivity, art, design or cinema.
2. Outline syllabus:
Researching VR/AR/MR
Team-working and design
Techniques for VR
3D development software for VR
3. Teaching and learning activities:
Class Hours
You will be explore the particular current limitations of using VR/MR. As a level 6 student you will be encouraged to critically explore issues of usability, playability and appropriateness of VR to interactive applications.
In your group work, you will critically debate pros and cons of this field and seek to develop innovative ways to develop content. You tutor will push your analytical thinking and challenge your ideas in order for you to develop solutions for your individual project.
Independent Learning
In your independent learning time, you will need to develop your strategies of how to overcome technical and conceptual problems. You will access to equipment to help you develop your projects. You will develop your critical research document and share this frequently with your class tutor in order to gain feedback and have your thinking challenged.
