Hello! My name is Ted Thorpe-Woods, and I am in my final year of a Bachelors of Physics at the University of Bath; this year I embarked upon a project in Communicating Physics. The aim of this project has been to explore and study the different ways in which Physics can be communicated to different audiences, and has been carried out by organizing three public engagement activities. This E-portfolio examines the latter two of the three activities- which I organised with my two other team members, Leigh and George.
The content of these two activities would focus on the research of our mentor, Dr Vicky Scowcroft[1], whose research concerns the measurement of distant astronomical objects using the Leavitt Law[2]. A more in-depth description and explanation of the research can be found by reading either (or both) of my reports on the topic [Appendix A]: one of which is a Technical report, and the other which is a Journalistic report.
Activity 2 involved organising a stall at Bath Taps into Science [3]fair, where primary school children were the main audience. For Activity 3 we chose to give an interactive talk with the Bath Women's Solo Club, where the audience were widowed or divorced women of mostly retirement age. This E-portfolio documents the planning, implementation, evaluation and reflection on these two activities, contained in the tabs above. I hope you enjoy reading it!
