Writing & Outreach

My own desire to promote mathematics and to make it accessible and exciting to a wide audience has resulted in two distinct but related professional interests. The first is mathematical writing for broad audiences. I became aware of the importance of, and challenges to creating, clear and engaging mathematical communication during my time as a SIAM-AAAS Mass Media Science and Engineering Fellow at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Subsequently, I have written articles for various professional publications and blogs, including Science, Notices of the American Mathematical Society, and the Association for Women in Mathematics Newsletter. You can read some of my articles on the Writing Portfolio page.

My second interest is in increasing participation in and enthusiasm for mathematics among young people. To this end I have been involved with numerous outreach activities aimed at encouraging middle school and high school students’ interest in math. My primary activity at the current time is directing GirlsGetMath@ICERM, a week-long non-residential program for high school students focusing on mathematics and computation. This program has been held annually at Brown University's Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM) since 2014. I have also engaged in curricular planning and training to spread GirlsGetMath to other sites nationally. You can learn more about GirlsGetMath here
