Edexcel A Level Chemistry gives you the opportunity to study a core of key Chemistry concepts in greater detail. Many of the ideas first covered at GCSE will be revisited but with a greater emphasis on explaining rather than simply describing the behaviour of molecules. This will enable you to develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of the subject and how they relate to each other as well as a deep appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific methods.
The course has a huge emphasis on developing practical skills to build your competence and confidence in practicals plus mathematics and problem-solving. To include making observations, collecting data, analysing experimental results using research to formulate conclusions & research of methods to formulate experimental plans. You will build up a range of practical skills that require creativity and accuracy as well as developing a firm understanding of health and safety issues. As Chemistry is a subject in which much learning stems from experimental work, you will learn to work effectively as part of a group, developing team participation and leadership skills.
Chemistry aims to give you the skills and understanding needed to make decisions about the way chemistry affects your everyday life. The course does this by applying key ideas and concepts into contemporary areas of chemistry including Pharmaceuticals & Chemical Research and by developing an understanding of how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society.
You will also gain an appreciation of the applications and implications of science, the benefits and risks that science brings and the ways in which society uses science to make decisions & furnish its needs. The course will allow you to develop a range of valuable skills that will be of great benefit in further study and in the workplace, such as practical competency, the ability to be a problem-solver, to handle data, to research & formulate reports, to be an independent learner and to communicate effectively.
Many university courses have a significant proportion of Chemistry content and Edexcel A Level Chemistry is excellent preparation for such further study. These include courses such as chemical engineering, medicine, veterinary medicine, biological sciences, environmental science, pharmacy, natural sciences and dentistry. Whilst many job opportunities specifically using chemistry require higher qualifications, most laboratory-based jobs benefit from a chemistry qualification, for instance being a dental assistant or veterinary assistant. Many employers view success at A Level Chemistry as a clear indication of sound academic ability.
