Carry out research and report findings of how to best carry out a practical to accurately determine the enthalpy change for two reactions. You will need to bring your report and practical method to your Core Practical 8 Laboratory session so that you can follow it.
1. Carry out & report suitable research into the techniques you could use.
2. Updated the provided practical method by making improvements based on your research - so that the technique described will provide valid results as equipment chosen was accurate and methods reduce random & systematic errors.
CPAC 2c - Identifies and controls significant quantitative variables where applicable, and plans approaches to take account of variables that cannot readily be controlled.
· Fills burette using a suitable funnel at eye level with goggles on
· Over fills burette & runs through to remove air bubble in tap
· Takes funnel out of burette before use
· Slows burette towards 30cm3 to dropwise speed to allow for precise volume to be measured
· Reads from bottom of the miniscus
· HCl put into polystyrene cup
· Cup stood in 250ml beaker (or more appropriate size) for stability
· Thermometer left in HCl for at least 3 mins to allow temperature to settle before initial temperature reading
· Powder is added in one swift movement & lid (with thermometer through it) is quickly replaced
· Thermometer is placed through polystyrene lid with lid on cup
· Reaction is stirred/swirled
· Equipment washed/changed between experiments /Dry cup is used each time
CPAC 5a - Uses appropriate software and/or tools to process data, carry out research and report findings.
Carry out suitable research to support your planning of how to accurately determine the enthalpy change for two reactions
Writes up a method in your own words specifying how accurate is achieved
Use research to support choices of equipment and planning by citing in the text
CPAC 5b - Sources of information are cited demonstrating that research has taken place, supporting planning and conclusions.
