Research and write up a method to accurately prepare a standard solution. You will need to bring your practical method to your Core Practical 2 Laboratory session so that you can follow it.
1. Carry out research to develop a method. Include neat pencil drawn diagrams.
CPAC 5a - Uses appropriate software and/or tools to process data, carry out research and report findings.
Carry out suitable research to support your planning of how to accurately make a standard solution
Writes up a method in your own words specifying how accurate is achieved
Use research to support choices of equipment and planning by citing in the text
CPAC 2d - Selects appropriate equipment and measurement strategies in order to ensure suitably accurate results. (standard solution not given in method so write up as HW before hand)
· Plans and writes method to prepare a standard solution to follow before practical (if cited as necessary and referenced in a bibliography 5b may be awarded here too)
· Dissolves 2.5g of solid in 100cm3 water in a beaker – (teacher check reading balance to 2dps)
· Makes a solution up accurately in a standard flask using correct procedure:
1. Transfers beaker contents to flask using a rod and funnel to avoid splashes
2. Transfers beaker washings to the flask
3. Washes rod and funnel to the flask
4. Makes up to the mark using deionised water
5. Uses bottom if the meniscus
6. Stoppers the flask
7. Inverts 20 x to ensure mixing
· Plan is carried out as described
· Calculates concentrations of acid correctly
· Inverts standard solution to ensure sufficient mixing and even concentration
· Chooses most accurate equipment for measuring masses and solutions available
· Readings taken from equipment are correct and to sufficient dps
burette clamp and stand ● solid sulfamic acid ● sodium hydroxide solution of unknown concentration ● methyl orange indicator ● 250 cm3 conical flask ● 25 cm3 volumetric pipette plus safety filler ● 100 cm3 beaker for transfer of solutions ● funnel for filling burette ● 250 cm3 beaker ● 250 cm3 volumetric flask ● mass balance (2 d.p.) ● eye protection (goggles)
2. Cite in text
3. Write bibliography
CPAC 5b - Sources of information are cited demonstrating that research has taken place, supporting planning and conclusions.
Carry out research to support your planning by writing a method to prepare an accurate standard solution before practical
Clearly identifiy any material that is a direct quote as such.
Cite within text as necessary
Compile a bibliography of texts from which material has been sourced in such a way that the reader may retrieve the information easily.
Read your textbook and the attached document and ensure that you:
can define accuracy; error; precision; uncertainty; reliability.
understand & can discuss the sources of errors which may occur during a titration practical activity.
know how to calculate the error of a volumetric flask; a pipette; a titration.
Consult CLEAPSS Hazcards® 98B, 91A & 32 . Perform a risk assessment using up-to-date information before this practical is carried out
