Carry out research and report findings of how to best carry out a practical to measure the electrode potential of a selection of electrochemical cells. You will need to bring your report and practical method to your Core Practical 10 Laboratory session so that you can follow it.
1. Carry out & report suitable research into the techniques you could use. Include neat pencil drawn diagrams.
2. Updated the provided practical method by making improvements based on your research - so that the technique described will provide suitably controls variables and provides the best quantitative analysis to achieve accurate results.
CPAC 2c- Identifies and controls significant quantitative variables where applicable, and plans approaches to take account of variables that cannot readily be controlled.
· Choose / identify control variables (e.g. concentration, surface area of metal, temperature, removal of oxidised material, volume of solution, accuracy of voltmeter, effect of length of time cells are connected (i.e. complete connection for just a short period of time, justify use of the same half cells for different experiments, use of new salt bridges to avoid contamination.)
· Plan how to control these variables
· Carry out control measures
CPAC 5a - Uses appropriate software and/or tools to process data, carry out research and report findings.
· Carry out suitable research online and from written sources into the effect of identified variables.
· Recorded information in own words - citing relevant information, facts and figures within the text as necessary.
CPAC 5b – Sources of information are cited demonstrating that research has taken place, supporting planning and conclusions
· Clearly identifie any material that is a direct quote as such.
· Research published data so you know what to expect:
o In terms of voltage
o Using ideas of ranking of the cells in terms of pd measured
· Compile a bibliography of texts from which material has been sourced in such a way that the reader may retrieve the information easily.
Consult CLEAPSS Hazcards® 27C, 55B, 82, 87 and 108B. Perform a risk assessment using up-to-date information before this practical is carried out
