Building A Co-Taught Classroom Space
Before implementing a co-taught approach, teaching partners may find it helpful to come together to create a shared vision of their collaborative space, discuss roles and dynamics of power within the joint classroom, and utilize their strengths as a team when discussing strategies for lesson implementation. These strategies allow teaching teams to develop a relationship based on trust and develop a shared classroom environment built on shared core values. Below are some topics that teaching partners may want to discuss before co-teaching to ensure that both feel confident and comfortable in sharing the classroom space.
What is your teaching philosophy? What may be some differences that the co-teaching team may need to discuss?
What are the goals and outcomes of the co-taught lesson or unit? Are the needs of both courses being met?
What is the role of each teacher during the preparation and delivery of the lesson? How may these roles change either during the lesson or throughout different lessons?
What is the expectation for behavior in the classroom? What are the rituals and routines of the co-taught class? How should the team handle any disruptions?
How will students be graded during the co-taught lesson? How can the team ensure that students receive consistent feedback and expectations when assessed?
How can we best support each other in the co-teaching process? How will the team handle any conflicts that may arise?
