It was a wonderful time as always, and we look forward to another great year of esports ahead of us. This year, we also celebrated our Varsity Overwatch team moving on to states next month and the Apex team for winning their finals earlier this season. We can only hope to bring such accolades back to Barberton in future seasons as well.

Over the weekend our Overwatch and Rocket League teams competed at the Northeast Regional to determine which teams might qualify for States in April. Although our Rocket League team played hard, they were unable to advance beyond the firs tround. Our Overwatch team was able to not only advance, but also win the entire regional! This gives them entrance to States and the better seed in the Group Stage. This is the first time that a Barberton Overwatch Esports team has qualified for States. We are excited to see how much further the team will go in April when States commence.

Unfortunately, due to a rare Thursday night update from Overwatch, we were unable to get our recordings done of the games for both JV and Varsity. We apologize for this, as we love making sure fans can have a place to see how the teams are doing. JV's game was absolutely outstanding as they came back from a tough round 1 loss against Shaker Heights, ultimately taking the series 3-1. We will do our best to continue to record and upload matches for our fans as quickly as possible to try and provide you with insightful commentary and exciting gameplay. Thank you for your continued support.

We will post some pictures soon.

Players got in some help coaching those new to the game and got a chance to try out Blizzard's newest game as well. We hope that the BHS esports team can help with future rollouts at the library as they move toward fully opening the esports space to the public.
September 5th
The esports team went down to St. Augustine's church on Labor Day to help out with the Kiwanis's pancake breakfast. They players worked hard to get the work done and give back to the community. June 20th
Over the weekend our Fortnite team battled it out at the Esports Ohio state competition to see who would be crowned the #1 team in all of Ohio. The team had a tough first day due to missing a player on their roster. The second day though, they were back at full strength and ended up making it to the grand finals. Barberton was unable to defeat Vermillion in a close match that was by far the highlight of the Fortnite matches. Our Magics were still able to take home the 2nd place title and all players took home an ESO medal. A placard was also awarded for 2nd place. There were also drawings going on for prizes that players could win, and our own team captain, Logan Pine, took home a 27" 165 hZ monitor.
Congratulations to the Fortnite players for going so far in the season and for being our first esports team to ever make it to the state level of competition. We hope to return in the fall and go for the top spot!

Our 31 Esports players were invited to visit the University of Akron to see their facilities, talk to coaches, and learn what collegial esports is like. They also learned what steps they need to take if they want to play for a university. Akron also went over with our players what types of esports scholarships are available, starting at $500 and going up from there.
We hope to work with the University of Akron in the future to bring some of their coaches down to work with our players or potentially take another trip for a workshop day.
Below are some pictures from the trip.

Students from the Barberton High School esports team partnered with the Barberton Public Library to help build the library's new esports space. Students learned how to assemble PCs and constructed the six gaming PCs which will soon be available to the general public at the library. They came without having every worked on such devices before, but afterward, we can confidently say they would be able to assemble another machine like those at the library again on their own. It was a great learning experience and the beginning of a wonderful partnership between the library and the BHS esports team. The funding for these machines, as well as those used at the high school, were generously provided through a grant through the Barberton Community Foundation in the fourth quarter of 2019.
