Process Paper
This topic is of interest to me because racial discrimination should be more analyzed and informative. Throughout the years racial discrimination has been overlooked, and the need for equality for African Americans is desperate. This topic was the leading event to African Americans using their voices to speak out and fight for their own rights and equality. I chose this topic among other topics because The Red Summer was very interesting, there were many parts about it to analyze as it was across the country. As this topic seemed not only intriguing but impactful to the rights and responsibilities throughout history. This topic relates to rights and responsibilities in history because this event was the start to the ongoing fight for equality for African Americans. This event allowed the issue of racial discrimination to be spoken out and be seen for change.
For a portion of my project I used a mix of different articles written by researchers who gather relevant information based on this topic. For the other parts of my project I used either primary images from the time period or newspapers from the time period of the act.The sources that were most helpful to me were probably the newspapers that included perspectives and stories of what had happened during all of the race riots. They were most helpful because it's easier to find information about history topics when you're getting the information from the actual time period. I found most of my sources from the Library of Congress. My history teacher and the student teacher in my history class. I used research questions to find the key points and major events within my project, at some points I even had to adjust and reform my questions in order to correctly answer the question.
I chose to create a website because I thought it would be interesting to work with and I wanted to switch things up because I did an exhibit last year. I created questions to gather information and research things about my topic. I was maybe not the best at putting time aside to put my project together but when I did I usually would use my work time in class or dedicate certain study hall classes to complete my sources.
In the early 1900s, racial segregation and violence caused by Jim Crow laws in the South and economic tensions after World War I led to the migration of African Americans to the North as they sought better opportunities. Racial tensions followed and sparked the race riots in the Red Summer of 1919. This helped contribute to the rights and responsibilities in history because the outcome helped expose the need for more equality for African Americans and the effects helped create more rights for African Americans.
My topic matters because the Red Summer was the start of protesting towards equality of African Americans. This was a necessary event in order to begin the reform for equality and relevant rights for African Americans.
