HISTORY AND PROCESS OF THE IOWA BANDMASTERS ASSOCIATION MAJOR LANDERS SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship in memory of Major George W. Landers, was established, is sponsored, and maintained by the Iowa Bandmasters Association (IBA). The scholarship is designed to help a promising Iowa high school senior meet his/her financial needs in preparing for a career in instrumental music education at an Iowa college or university. The first Major Landers scholarship was awarded to Harvey Solberger in 1956.
Each IBA district holds preliminary auditions to determine their first-place winner who will represent their district at the IBA Major Landers scholarship competition. The IBA Major Landers scholarship competition is held on the Friday of the annual IBA Conference in May at the Des Moines Mariott.
Both the district and the state auditions include a solo performance, a sight-reading session, a theory test, and an interview. In addition, interested applicants must submit two letters of recommendation, their high school transcripts, and a bio.
