6th Grade Science Topics Covered:
Unit 1: Properties of Matter
Unit 2: Elements and Chemical Change
Unit 3: Force and Motion
Unit 4: Energy
Unit 5: Solar System
Unit 6: Earth's Layers
Unit 7: Resource Management
Unit 8: Ecosystems
Unit 9: Organisms
Sixth grade science builds foundational knowledge in physical, earth, and life sciences. Students investigate the properties of matter, element classification, density, and chemical changes. Concepts of force, motion, and energy are explored through hands-on investigations aligned to Newton’s Third Law. Students study Earth’s systems, the Sun–Earth–Moon relationship, and responsible resource use. Life science instruction focuses on cells, ecosystem organization, and interactions between organisms and their environments.
Science 7
Grading:
50% Test/Major Grades (Tests/Projects/etc…)
30% Lab Grades
20% Daily Grades
7th Grade Science Topics Covered:
Unit 1: Elements and Compounds
Unit 2: Changes in Matter and Solutions
Unit 3: Motion
Unit 4: Balanced and Unbalanced Forces
Unit 5: Thermal Energy
Unit 6: Solar System
Unit 7: Plate Tectonics
Unit 8: Human Impact on the Hydrosphere
Unit 9: Matter and Energy in Ecosystems
Unit 10: Structures and Systems in Organisms
Unit 11: Inherited Traits
Unit 12: Taxonomy
Seventh grade science expands student understanding of matter, motion, Earth systems, and living organisms. Students compare elements and compounds, explore solutions and thermal energy, and analyze force and motion using Newton’s First Law. Instruction includes the study of the solar system, Earth’s changing surface, human impacts on natural resources, and life science concepts such as body systems, inheritance, natural selection, ecosystem energy flow, biodiversity, and classification.
Science 8
Grading:
50% Test/Major Grades (Tests/Projects/etc…)
30% Lab Grades
20% Daily Grades
8th Grade Science Topics Covered:
Unit 1:Properties of Matter
Unit 2: Chemical Reactions
Unit 3: Force and Motion
Unit 4: Waves
Unit 5: The Universe
Unit 6: Global Weather Systems
Unit 7: Climate Change
Unit 8: Ecosystems
Unit 9: Cell Structures and Functions
Unit 10: Traits of Organisms
Unit 11: Student-Designed Investigations
Eighth grade science integrates physical, earth, and life sciences. Students examine matter, including elements, compounds, mixtures, and conservation of mass. Force, motion, and waves are explored through Newton’s Second Law and energy transfer. Students study the universe, climate systems, and factors affecting weather and climate. Life science instruction focuses on cell organelles, genetics, inheritance, and how organisms respond to environmental and human-caused changes.
8th Grade Honors Science – Placement Requirements
To be considered for 8th Grade Honors Science, students must meet the following criteria:
A minimum Science MAP score of 220 RIT on the winter 7th grade assessment
A demonstrated history of meeting or exceeding expectations on prior science unit assessments
Placement reflects consistent academic performance and readiness for advanced, accelerated science instruction.
