Inserting things into a Google Doc is similar to other word processing programs such as Microsoft Word, however there are some differences. In this lesson you will learn how to insert and manipulate images, tables, and equations.
Insert- Putting something additional into a document.
The first step for getting images into Google Docs is finding them. You can search for images in a Doc or you can search in a browser. Watch the video for more instructions.
Maybe you already have a picture that you want to insert into a Doc. If it's on your computer (or flash drive), on your Google Drive, or in Google Photos you should have no problem inserting the image. Watch the video for more instructions.
NOTE: You can NOT copy and paste all images into a Doc. This works for some images, but not all so get use to the process below.
Once you have inserted an image into a Doc, you can make some format adjustments. There are not as many formatting options as Microsoft Word, however you can make basic changes that will make your Doc look professional.
Note: Image aspect ratio is not locked on your images. This means if you don't adjust the image width and height equally, the image could become cut off or distorted.
Tables can be used for all kinds of purposes in Google Docs. You can insert a single celled table to give a page or paragraph a boarder, you can create tables for students to complete, you can even use tables to create documents with unique formatting. Below yo will find instructions for inserting and editing a table, however you should try to create some for yourself to get a better understanding of how they can be used.
NOTE: Google Docs will let you go as high as a 20 X 20 table, however you will have the options to add rows or columns after you insert your table.
To Change the size of a cell:
To change the boarder of a cell:
To change the shading of a cell:
To add or delete rows/ columns:
Basic mathematical symbols such as +, -, /, *, =, <, and > are located on the keyboard and can be added to your document by typing them like you would any other character. If you are in need of more advanced mathematical symbols you will need to insert them as instructed below.
NOTE: Equations can be difficult to read in smaller font sizes. Highlight the equations and adjust the font size to make them easier to read.
Google Docs gives you options to insert other things such as a table of contents, footnotes, charts, horizontal lines, and more. These are not covered in this lesson because they are easy to figure out once you have tried them, or because they require extensive instruction. How will you know which are which? Try them all! Don't be afraid to experiment with inserts. They can make your Docs more professional and they can be useful when you need them.
