Identifying and Selecting Sources

The tools in this section will assist you in finding and choosing credible sources for your research. This, in conjunction with the tasks in the next sections, will help you to earn a rating for ELA.7.2 Identify and select credible, diverse sources to gather evidence. Be sure to review the continuum so you are familiar with the skills you will need to demonstrate.

In order to determine if a source is credible you will need to consider the following key factors:

  • Who are the author and the publisher?
    • Does the information come from an expert or other trusted authority in the field?
  • What is the publication date?
    • Is the information up to date, is it current?
  • What are the cited sources?
    • Are there any sources cited, are they trustworthy?

Keep in mind that if there are virus warnings, many pop-ups or if the site is requesting a lot of personal information from you, it may not be a credible source.

You should also remember that there are other, non-electronic ways to identify sources and collect information, such as visiting your local library and working with a librarian for more help.
