Gathering and Organizing Information

The tools in this section will assist you in organizing and citing the information you are gathering for your research question. This, in conjunction with the tasks in the next section, will help you to earn a rating for ELA.7.3 Use systems to gather and organize information. Be sure to review the continuum so you are familiar with the skills you will need to demonstrate.

Citing gives credit where credit is due. There are several different formats for citations (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago). Ask your teacher which format is preferred and then follow the guidelines for that style of formatting. Click on the links below to learn more about the different styles of citation.

When to cite a source-

  • You use quotes
  • You paraphrase someone else’s words or ideas
  • You use an idea that someone else has already expressed
  • You make specific reference to the work of another
  • Someone else's work has been critical in developing your own ideas.
