This project arose out of a discussion Kal Mannis (AZ Science Center) has had over the last few years with ASU's ASAP Fellows project leads and their emphasis on innovative and engaging STEM professional learning. In the Fall of 2023, Kal, in collaboration with the University of Arizona's School of Mining and Mineral Resources K12 outreach team, and the Education Director and Specialists from the Society for Mining and Metallurgy Exploration (SME) came together to create a daylong experiential PD. The day included presentations on sustainability, mining careers, hands-on activities, and guided tours on the exhibit floor of the International MinExchange Conference. Teachers were able to speak with engineers, drone pilots, and mine owners, developing a deeper understanding of what careers are available and what they might need to add to their lessons to support their students.
