While students have the option to create their maps and conduct their research using any software, all entries to the Student Competition must be submitted as ArcGIS Storymaps, a cloud-based software hosted by Esri. Any U.S. K-12 public, non-public, or home school are eligible to receive a free ArcGIS Online Account (see below for details). However, before requesting an account, first check that your school or organization doesn’t already have an account you and your students can use.
If your school or organization already has an Esri ArcGIS Online organizational account, talk with your administration about getting your students access to that account first. Refer to the Esri Sites with ArcGIS School Bundle online map to determine if your school/organization already has an account. For help using the website, refer to this video or transcript.
If your school or organization does not have an Esri ArcGIS Online organizational account, there are two ways you can get an account for the competition. For assistance in learning about the Bundle or setting up an AZGeo account, please email agic.staff@gmail.com or Chuck Powell (cpowell@westlandresources.com).
Any U.S. K-12 public, non-public, or home school are eligible to receive a free ArcGIS Online Account through the Esri ArcGIS for Schools Bundle. Getting the bundle would provide accounts to anyone in your school or organization. This option is good for schools or organizations that will have quite a few students entering the competition.
Before applying for the ArcGIS for School Bundle, Esri has some requirements that must be met.
Applicants must be a member of the IT staff or a curriculum lead for your district
When requesting the ArcGIS for Schools Bundle, you must be prepared to manage the software and accounts that come with it
You and your students cannot already have access to ArcGIS Online accounts for your district
Follow the video or transcript below to see how to request the bundle.

Another option is AZGeo, Arizona’s geospatial data clearinghouse, which includes access to ArcGIS Online and all of its software, including ArcGIS Storymaps. Adult sponsors would have the ability to request an account for their student or teams. This option is good if your school or organization will only have a few students competing and does not wish to manage their own ArcGIS Online organizational account.
Requirements for AZGeo Accounts
Limit one account per entry. Entries may be submitted by one of the following:
Student - for students who will be submitting individual storymaps
Team - for a pair of students who will be working together to submit a single storymap
Class - for an adult sponsor who will submit a single storymap on behalf of an entire class. This option is only available to elementary divisions (grades K-5).
Accounts are temporary and will be shut down soon after the competition completes
However, entries will be preserved following the competition
Requesting an AZGeo Account
Adult sponsors will request accounts using the AZGeo Account Request Form
Note, one account will be provided per entry. See "Requirements for AZGeo Accounts" above for more details.
An email will be sent to the adult sponsor for each account requested
The email will include instructions on how to activate each account and create a password. Once activated, students will be able to access the account themselves using a username and password.
The adult sponsor will distribute the account usernames and passwords to the students
