Digital Technologies 2020
Project Brief
I am designing my game for the Grey District Library. I am going to be using GameFroot to design a water related game. Spark has recently made an amazing electronic device called the Electric Garden. One of the things The Electric Garden gets data from the soil in an ordinary garden and tells us basically everything about it. We will use ideas off the electric garden and use it to make a project at Greymouth High school. My team members are Alex, Ryan and Miro and we are all from Awahono school.
Designing My Game
Today I learnt how to use Gamefroot to design a game. We had a chance to make a game that includes obstacles, characters, and rewards. The main character in the game is named Maia. My game is based in a forestry setting. As you can see in the picture to the left there is a tower of boxes blocking the characters path and the path is on top of water so she can not get across and she has to find another way.
Adding A Challenge
Today my learning intention is to test two games and find the challenge in them to help me make a challenge in my own game when we make one. The first thing that we got to do while learning how to make a challenge was to play/read The Oat The Goat story. One of the challenges that I had to face while playing/reading Oat The Goat was to try and make good choices to stop bullying. At the start I picked the wrong one and it didn't turn out very well but after that I learnt that reacting calmly is the best way to deal with bullying. The game also had great clear animation! The second game that we got to try out was called Curriculum for the Future. This one was a lot more challenging than the first one but I was so addicted while playing it! While the first games was more about bullying, the second one was based on students education.
Designing The Garden Layout
Today I am designing my Garden Layout. I went outside to have a look at the garden and while looking around I found the perfect spot to make my layout on. That was at the back of the garden where the fence was. I used The Gardena App to make my Garden Layout. As you can see there are a few plants climbing up the fence and my idea was that I could have some vines on the back fence to give it a forest affect. I also added some lavender to the soil which makes it look nice and colourful.
Promotional Material For My Game
I am making a game on Maia The Brave from Gamefroot. There is lots of obstacles like swamps that you can't walk over, a chicken walking up and down and some crates that can't be jumped over. Maia needs to go and get the coins but can't go through the water so she has to find another way. While doing this we had to make a Gamefroot poster. They had to be fruit based so I picked a lemon, then we had to pick a cool frame and write something like "Play My Game on Gamefroot @ GHS Library." To finish it of we had to write our first and last name at the bottom with your school name. We then all played each others games. Alex played mine and said that it was not challenging or fun, that there was not much to do and there wasn't enough coins. So those are the things I need to improve on! I had a go at Miro's game as well. His game was really challenging you had to get 28 coins but I only go one because I died in the first two seconds of the game.
Reflection
Because of Covid-19 we were not able to hold the Gamefroot session at the Greymouth Library so instead we held it at the Grey High Library. First we got on to our recent made games and picked a good one for our classmates to play.
The people who played it included Lake Brunner School and some of my friends from Awahono. The Certificates that we made were given out to the people who won 3,4 or 5 times in a row. There was also a little TREAT for giving feedback which were some pineapple lumps!
Next the year 13's came in and tried out games as well. Most of my feedback for my game was either it was good, or you could add more obstacles. I think this was a great opportunity to change our games and be proud of them. Next time I am going to add more obstacles and rewards.
