What’s Happening in 2nd Grade?

We are so excited to be in 2nd grade this year! After teaching six years of kindergarten, Mrs. Bankhead is honored to be teaching 2nd graders, especially being able to teach some of her kindergarteners again. Mrs. Pedrego is enthusiastic about starting her teaching career at Robles Elementary School in 2nd grade.

We are super excited to have our first culminating project at Robles. This is a project where we put together all of our learning in 2nd grade to create something amazing. We are going to be building our own theme park. We will be researching what a theme park is and writing a paragraph about what we have learned. We will also be analyzing standard units of measurement and identifying which units are best to measure a large space like a theme park. We will also be looking deeply into the story structure of one of our favorite stories, Penguin Chick, by Betty Tantham. This story will be the theme of our park, so all of our attractions will be centered around the story. Putting together what we learn through our research and taking some ideas from our story will make for a great theme park. Here is a preview of some of our creations so far.

Big Math Ideas:

1) Understand place value within grouping of hundreds, tens, and ones

2) Develop competency of addition/subtraction strategies

3) Understand standard units of measurement

Big Reading Ideas:

1) Read and apply word analysis skills in decoding 1 or 2 syllable words, vowel pairs, digraphs, etc.

2) Comprehend a variety of text

3) Write a descriptive paragraph
