Altar Valley Middle School has accomplished a lot in the first 133 days of the school year! As we look forward to the next 47 days as we finish the 2022 - 2023 school year we have a lot of learning still ahead! We just finished our third benchmark assessments and are in the process of using that data to drive our next steps. We will be sharing that information with students and parents in the coming weeks to ensure that all members of the team have the needed information to move us forward with our school goals!
Parents play an important role on the team. This was evident with our turnout for parent teacher conferences. All slots were filled by each team with some slots double booked with teachers dividing their time to ensure that all parents that attended were able to meet with a teacher and get valuable information regarding their child.
Great things are happening on our campus to educate the whole child. This month we would like to spotlight our 6th grade team. I am extremely proud of the students and staff and the effort they put into their learning. The teachers decided to empower their students by having them write what they have been learning this year. Enjoy learning about our 6th Graders!

Mathematics

Mathematics, also known as “Math” is a very useful class that is taught by a wonderful teacher named Ms. Ramos. Students have learned many things such as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions. The most recent thing that the class has learned would be collecting data, and placing the information on a dot plot or on a line plot. Sixth grade students have also been taught volume and area of three dimensional shapes and two dimensional shapes. On March 1st we took our Math benchmark test, and many of the students showed growth in the test. This showed the power of grit and perseverance.
Science

In Science, as students we learned about the sequences of an eclipse. We have also learned about tides, volcanoes, our solar system, climate change, reproduction/traits, and much more. The sixth grade also conducted a volcano eruption experiment within the year, all of the volcanoes were very successful. In addition, the classes have done other experiments involving their senses and water pressure. This week is exciting because we are doing rocket science. It is cool to make our own rockets and do a flight test in front of the class. Who do you think can zoom the highest? These are all important as students think of their future careers in science.
English Language Arts

During ELA, also formally known as English Language Arts, sixth graders have accomplished many things. For example, we have acquired the knowledge of how to properly write an informative and an argumentative essay. Which do you think makes a better pet - a cat or a dog? The sixth graders surely have many reasons backed-up by strong evidence for their claim on the issue. They have been taught all of these accomplishments by our teacher Mrs. Cristales. Mrs. Cristales has educated the sixth graders on why R.A.C.E strategy is important in delivering your thoughts and ideas in writing. She has also given the students an idea of other things such as test-taking strategies, having a growth mindset in achieving our goals, and reading with prosody (expressive reading) as part of oral reading fluency. In addition, the class has been taught with effective reading strategies such as interacting with the text through close reading, questioning, use of graphic organizers, etc. Reading indeed is a critical tool in life.
Social Studies

In Social Studies sixth graders are learning many things from each other about ancient civilizations, we are learning about their foods, weapons, and how these people dressed. The students of both classes were able to carry on research about different ancient communities and were able to present effectively to their peers on what they were assigned or what they chose. We also used skills from English Language Arts with informative essay writing. We used that knowledge to write an informational essay about a Greek God of their choice. Why is this important, you might ask? Knowing about other cultures helps us appreciate the world around us. Diversity is indeed beautiful.
