Parents & Guardians,
You have an incredible opportunity to enrich the life of your child with the gift of music. Throughout their experience at Avondale, they will have the opportunity to perform in a variety of ensembles, including middle school choirs, concert choirs, vocal jazz ensemble, and even the chorus for our school musicals. During this time they will develop a strong appreciation for music, the ability to create excellent music, develop their leadership abilities, strengthen their work ethic, enhance their communication skills, and create friendships & memories that can last a lifetime!
Music does more than just make sounds, it changes the way we think and act. The skills your child will learn in music will help them be successful on the stage, in the classroom, and for the rest of their lives. EMPOWER your child.
Here are some of the many attributes we strengthen within the Avondale Choirs:
Grit - aka, try, try, try again. Life is full of challenges, but choir kids strengthen their grit and are able to persevere through any challenge they encounter.
Ownership - The Choir program is a big organization with many moving parts. With our diverse set of skills, we have many different ways to strengthen and share them. Interested in bringing people together? Help plan the annual back-to-school choir picnic. Want to sing a solo? Audition for solos in class, or prepare one for Solo & Ensemble. Love challenging music? Rally up a few friends for your own student-led ensemble at Solo & Ensemble.
Teamwork - Choir is different than math, science, or any other class. When we work, we work together. When we succeed, we succeed together.
Hoping to see you in the choir!
Sincerely,
Rachel Pedersen & Kevin Cornwell

How long is choir class?
Choir is a FULL YEAR commitment. Students who sign up for choir agree to complete 6th Grade Choir, no schedule changes will be permitted.
How much will it cost?
Students will need a "choir uniform" consisting of a solid black dress shirt, solid black dress pants, and solid black dress shoes.
If I don't take choir in 6th grade, can I take it in 7th grade?
Students who wish to join choir after 6th grade will be asked to audition.
Do students learn to read music in choir?
Yes! Students learn to read music and sing actual songs as part of the choir.
What are the elective course offerings for 6th grade students?
There is one choice to be made for 6th grade students. Is your student interested in one of the music offerings? We offer full year electives of Band and Choir. Students may request one of these full year electives. If students are not interested in one of these offerings, then they will be scheduled for the trimester elective rotation of offerings. If a student has chosen choir then they will be scheduled in the appropriate hour. They will additionally be scheduled for one trimester of STEM class and the student will rank order the remaining trimester elective offerings. Every effort will be made to schedule students in their top ranked trimester elective classes.
Can students with an IEP or LEP designation take choir?
Absolutely! If a student has a year long support class and choir, then the student will not take STEM or any of the other trimester electives offered at AMS.
