Our Objective & History

Our Objective: To promote personal growth through teamwork, motivation & fitness.

Avon crew was established in 2007 under the direction of Soo Passmoor. In 2008, John Kostal joined the team along with Pam Rosow when help was needed as the team began to grow. Eric Rosow joined the team as the Girl's Head Coach. Coach John  has remained the Boys' Head Coach and together they continued to develop and mentor the student-athletes. Coach Chip Saccoccio and Coach Nancy Kostal joined the team in 2021, with Coach Chip as the Girls' Head Coach and Coach Nancy as an additional fitness and land training coach.  Upon Coach Chip's retirement from the program in June of 2023, Coach Nancy became the Girls' Head Coach and Coach Colleen Albert joined the team as the Girl's Water Coach.

Since that time, student athletes have participated in the fall and/or spring season of the crew program. Our student athletes have the opportunity to participate in a unique, challenging and exciting sport that exemplifies teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, physical conditioning and commitment.

Avon High School is one of the thirteen public schools in Connecticut to offer rowing as a varsity sport. Graduates from the Avon crew team program have represented Avon high School at the NCAA D1, D2 and D3 levels, gone on to coach other high school programs and even started up a collegiate rowing program. In addition, Avon rowers have participated in high performance national team camps and represented our school as a member of the Junior National Team.

The team welcomes all students to this ultimate team sport which promotes personal growth through teamwork, motivation & fitness.
