Overview of OSHA 30 Hour Training

The United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was created to help implement workplace safety standards to prevent worker injuries. OSHA developed the OSHA 30 hour and safety program to improve worker safety in the construction field as well as general industries.

The OSHA 30 Class

Taking the OSHA 30 hour training course, sometimes referred to as OSHA 30 certification, covers the most important and dangerous conditions for a particular job situation. There are various dangers in any job site and workers need to know the correct way to do their job and prevent injuries.

Many Localities Require the OSHA 30 Hour Class

Many states, government agencies, and individual jobs require workers to have the OSHA 30 card before they enter the job site. Specifically, New York City, require the OSHA 30 card for all workers on public funded projects of varying sizes.

OSHA Safety Training Summary

The OSHA 30 training courses have greatly improved worker safety in the construction industry as well as other industries.

Companies want the best worker so having the extra OSHA certification can be a good incentive.

The 30 hr course will be given by Mr. Dobis in Room 534 during the January regents break and the other during the June regents break.

30-Hour Construction Industry OSHA Outreach Training Program – Designated Training Topics. The 30-hour Construction OSHA Outreach Training Program is intended to provide a variety of training to workers with some safety responsibility. Training should emphasize hazard identification, avoidance, control, and prevention, not OSHA standards. Instructional time must be a minimum of 30 hours. The topic requirements are as follows:

1. Mandatory - 14 hours

a) Introduction to OSHA – 2 hour.

b) Managing Safety and Health – Accident Investigations 2 hours.

c) OSHA Focus Four Hazards – 6 hours.

(1) Falls -- 2 hours

(2) Electrocution - 2 hours

(3) Struck-By (e.g., falling objects, trucks, cranes) - 1 hour

(4) Caught-In or Between (e.g., trench hazards, equipment) - 1 hour

d) Personal Protective and Lifesaving Equipment – 2 hours

e) Health Hazards in Construction - Crystalline Silica – 2 hours

f) Stairways and Ladders – 1 hour

2. Elective - 12 hours

a) Concrete and Masonry Construction - 1 hour.

b) Confined Space Entry. - 2.5 hour

c) Cranes, Derricks, Hoists, Elevators and Conveyors. - 2.5 hour

d) Ergonomics. - 0.5 hour

e) Excavations. - 2.5 hour

f) Materials Handling, Storage, Use and Disposal. - 1 hour

g) Safety & Health Program - 2 hour

h) Powered Industrial Vehicles. - 1 hour

j) Tools - Hand and Power. - 1 hour

3. Optional - 4 hours. Expand on the mandatory or elective topics.
