"My son has been a student in the magnet program at Lively for almost two years now. I could not be happier with this school. It is the perfect place for my son. The teachers are dedicated and really get the kids excited about learning. Before Lively, my son was a bright underachiever: mostly a B student. Since he has been at Lively, he has become a straight-A honor roll student. He has also developed many deep and lasting friendships with kids who share his same interests. I am so grateful to Lively for getting my son motivated about learning and supporting him academically and socially. He is so much happier and more confident now. Thank you, Lively!"

"The Magnet program has been a great opportunity for [my son] to dive deep into Law, Humanities and Social Studies. My son has decided he now wants to become a lawyer - he is impressed by his teacher, Mr Galan, and has learned so much. Especially the hands-on experience of mock trials has shaped [his] mindset to wanting to help do better in the world, by becoming a lawyer and convicting the bad guys. The teachers at the Magnet Programs are very compassionate and teach with unique and hands-on instructions. This makes it possible for the student to immerse into the subject and connect with it, rather than just reading a textbook and taking tests."

Henry N: My experience at Lively has been great! The people here are nice, the teachers are passionate about education, and the athletics program is fantastic! In the future, I am looking forward to a higher tier of education and athleticism, as well as next year's teachers looking great!
Elliott O: My favorite aspect of Lively Middle School is the interesting programs they offer, including Mock Trial and Anthropology. I enjoy the magnet program because it lets me enroll in more challenging classes so I can push myself to do better. I also like that you get a more variety of classes when you're in the magnet program. One thing I am looking forward to this school year Is track, tennis, and the mock trial field trip. Lastly, my experience at Lively has been better than I thought because when my older brother went here he always made it sound bad but in reality it's good. Some highlights are the field trips to the courthouse, and UT that happened last year.
Giselle M: My favorite aspect of Lively Middle School is the classes, I think they are very unique. What aspects of Lively I am looking forward are the grades, the friends, and the classes. My experience at Lively is pretty good I would say, the classes are fine, I have good friends and I just like it better than my old school.
Eliza B: My favorite aspect of Lively Middle School is Model U.N. I really enjoy Model U.N. because it's very student and project-oriented, meaning that the class is mainly run by the students. The students run the simulations, have the freedom to have structured conversations on their own, and me and several of my peers are even organizing a conference in May. We get to compete in conferences, and it is a great opportunity to make new friends and build community. What I am really excited about in the future for Model U.N. is seeing our conference in action and watching delegates get to compete in committees we made.
Santiago G: My favorite thing about Lively is that there are a lot of resources for me. I enjoy learning about law.
Edrei G: My favorite aspect of Lively Middle School is the view from the track. I look forward to having a STEM class. I loved this class, and it has everything that I want for my career.
"The best part of the magnet program is, without a doubt, the mock trial program. The magnet law program is unlike any other in the district, offering students a unique opportunity to make friends, build lasting memories, and gain valuable insight into our criminal and civil justice systems. The mock trial program has a rich history of celebrating student success—walk into the mock trial classroom, and you’ll see banners hanging, creative artwork and projects on display, and, most importantly, a sense of history in every corner.
Students who participate in the magnet program don’t just feel like they’re going to school every day—they feel like they’re building a legacy and contributing to something greater than themselves. And there is no better feeling than knowing you are making a difference."

"To me the best part of the magnet program at Lively is the opportunities when it comes to classes and other academic activities, being able to have a specialized law program really helps for anyone who wants to get into legal studies.
So, to me, the best parts are the extra classes and opportunities I was able to have at Lively."

For nearly three decades, I have helped lead the Law Program at Lively Middle School in Austin, Texas. My unwavering commitment to teaching students about the U.S. legal system comes from a passion for nurturing critical thinking, a deep respect for the courts, and a flair for innovative, real-world lessons. While many educators move on or change roles, my long tenure reflects the immense gratification I find in guiding students toward intellectual independence.
One major reason my class is among the most popular at Lively Middle School is that I strive to inspire students to truly want to learn. I don’t simply lecture on legal terminology or procedures; instead, I show them how to think like lawyers and analyze scenarios from multiple angles. I spark curiosity and encourage open debate by weaving in landmark cases and relevant current events. My students quickly discover that learning law isn’t just memorization—it’s an exercise in logic, empathy, and ethical responsibility.
My “outside the box” teaching method revolves around experiential learning. Under my guidance, students assume roles as attorneys, witnesses, and jurors during classroom Mock Trials. This interactive approach culminates in trips to real courtrooms, where they observe and even participate in legal proceedings. Watching them confidently present arguments or question witnesses in the courtroom is thrilling and transformative. Many students leave my class more articulate, self-assured, and eager to engage with real-world issues.
Throughout my 27-year journey, my dedication has consistently reflected the values Lively Middle School seeks to instill: critical thinking, respect for civic institutions, and active, hands-on learning. My students carry these lessons well beyond the classroom, developing a lifelong appreciation for justice and fair play. In a world often lacking in civil discourse, I believe my enduring commitment stands as proof that passion, creativity, and practical experience can spark not just an interest in law—but a genuine love of learning.
