How to Join
Thank for your interest in being part of the Kealing Band Family! You can find information for our instrument try out days and auditions below.
You do not need to have any musical experience to join band!
Option 1 **most popular option**: I want to learn to play an instrument in a beginning level class.
Our 2022-2023 Instrument Try Out Day has past, but you can still join! Beginning Band classes are open to all new band students at Kealing (grades 6-8). Email Mr. Hinojosa for more information at david.hinojosa@austinisd.org.
Option 2: I have at least one year of experience playing a band instrument.
Incoming students with at least one year of playing experience on a band instrument and want to audition for one of our Advanced Bands (Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble) should email david.hinojosa@austinisd.org.
FAQ
Q: My child is involved in sports and other after-school activities. Will they have enough time to be in band?
A: Yes! Beginning band students only have 1-2 group rehearsals outside the school day over the course of the school year. Beginning band is a class that meets during the school day. Most of our students are very involved in other sports, activities, and clubs inside and outside of school.
Q: My child has never studied music before? Will they be successful if they sign up for band?
A: Yes! Most of our students have never played a musical instrument before they come to us. We start from square one and teach all of the fundamental skills necessary to be successful in playing and reading music.
Q: How will you help decide which instrument my child will play?
A: Students should plan to attend our instrument try out day listed above. Students will be able to try as many instruments as they'd like. Then, students will be able to make final decision which instrument they are wanting to learn with the assistance of a band director.
Q: What if my child already knows which instrument they want to play?
A: We encourage students to come with an open mind when choosing an instrument. Many students are very familiar with the sound of a saxophone or trumpet, but may have not ever thought about trying the bassoon or euphonium. Our goal is to find the instrument that each student is most motivated to learn.
Q: Will my child perform in concerts as a part of the band?
A: Yes! The beginning band students will perform 2-3 concerts during the school year. Parents will be amazed at the level of musicianship that is displayed from these wonderful young performers.
Q: What are private lessons?
A: Many of our families take advantage of the private lesson instruction program that takes place at Kealing, but it is not a requirement for every student to do so. Private lessons are offered for any student who would like extra instruction with a professional who specializes on their instrument. It is incredibly helpful to have beginner students be able to have an individualized curriculum that works at their own pace. Private lessons take place at Kealing after school or during the student’s band class period. There are also local non-profit organizations that work with students at our school that demonstrate a financial need, and they are paired with a private teacher for little or no cost.
Q: Should I go buy an instrument?
A: Not yet! Purchasing, or renting an instrument can be complicated. Instruments come in a variety of brands and models with different options and accessories. Once we help your family select which instrument your child will play, we will give you all the information you will need about supplies.
