Fold a piece of paper in half (hotdog in teacher lingo).
On the side with the crease, cut pretty close to the end of the paper from the crease, up to the open side of the paper. Do not cut the strip of paper off.
After you have cut this slit on both sides, cut a line along the crease between these two slits. This opens the middle.
Keep the paper folded, now cut from the open side up toward the crease. Again, do not cut all the way through.
Then repeat back and forth cutting from crease to open side, open side to crease, until you have made slits along the entire side of the paper.
Unfold the paper carefully. And you now have a hole cut in your paper that is large enough to walk through-or at least you understand the concept now. The closer together you make your cuts, the larger your "hole" will be.
