COMMUNICATION PHILOSOPHY:
We want literate students who can read, write, and communicate effectively through English.
We want families to have choices about communication modes within the Austin RDSPD for their children.
We want to make individual decisions about communication modes for each child based on data and family preference.
We want committed staff who believe in communication options and are well trained to deliver instruction in the chosen mode of communication for each student.
We want to help students maximize their language, speech, and auditory potential.
IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES:
We will continue to offer instructional arrangements to students based on communication mode throughout the program with appropriate support services.
We will train staff in the needed communication mode (SEE, Cued Speech, oral instruction).
We will expect staff and students to talk when they sign to facilitate speech and speechreading development.
We will expect students to wear amplification equipment (if determined to be appropriate) during school hours to maximize listening skills.
We will evaluate student progress annually through the collection of objective data.
We will recommend changes in communication modes to families using our best professional opinion based on data.
